Chester feels like a hidden gem you stumble upon after winding your way down quiet country roads. Just when you start to wonder what awaits, you’ll arrive in Chester and be greeted by a picture-perfect Main Street lined with a string of brightly painted storefronts, local shops, and cozy cafés. ☕️

With plenty to do for a full day, this post will help you plan the perfect day in Chester whether you’re looking for a hike and a cafe, downtown stroll and lunch, a brewery and bookstore, or all the above – you will find it here!

Living in CT almost all my life, I couldn’t believe what a cute town it is and how much I loved it and how in my decades of living here I had never been before! Now it’s a town I enjoy visiting in almost every season.

My perfect day in Chester consists of a hike, a latte and baked goods at Simon’s Marketplace, strolling up and down Main St with a detour down Water Street to the cutest bookshop – and ending at The Wheatmarket for lunch or the award winning Grano Arso for dinner.

Let’s explore all this little riverside town has to offer! ⬇️⬇️

Right on Main Street, you can’t miss it, Simon’s Marketplace is affectionately dubbed “Chester’s Living Room”. Since 2004 Simon’s offers scratch-made meals, a full espresso bar, and too many baked goods to choose just one!

Simon’s opens at 8am everyday and closes at 6 except for Sundays at 5pm.

2nd stop: Choose a Hike 🥾

🥾Cockaponset State Forest

Cockaponset is one of of Connecticut’s largest state forests and it includes the super scenic Pattaconk Reservoir Loop which is under 20 minutes from Chester.

The full loop is 5 miles but you can take the short walk to the reservoir, let the dogs swim, then turn back. 🙂

🥾Mount Pisgah

Just a short drive from Chester lies Mount Pisgah, a modest yet charming summit offering lovely woodland walking and rewarding views. The Mount Pisgah Loop Trail spans about 4.8 miles, with roughly 480 feet of elevation gain, making it a moderate hike that typically takes around 2 to 2.5 hours to complete.

You’ll venture through varied terrain—lush forest, marshy sections, and scenic lookout points—culminating in a surprisingly wide-ranging view from the top. Though the path is well-marked, note that numerous switchbacks and overlapping segments can make navigation a tad confusing—downloading the map from AllTrails ahead of time helps!

🥾Millers Pond

Tucked conveniently near Durham, Millers Pond State Park is a serene and charming spot centered around a spring-fed 33-acre pond that’s crystal clear.

The terrain is flat and family-friendly, offering an easy 1.5-mile loop around the pond with minimal elevation gain (around 59 ft), generally completed in under an hour. The path is well-marked and peaceful, though the ground may get a bit rocky in spots so hiking boots are recommended.

If you want a longer hike to a view (see photos above 📸) check out the 4.2 mile Bear Rock via Mattabesett Trail. This moderate trail takes you along Millers Pond, up to the view at Bear Rock then down the way you came.

Historically, the pond dates back to 1704, when Thomas Miller dammed its outlet to feed a downstream gristmill—a peaceful legacy preserved today in the park’s natural charm.

3rd: Lunch in Chester 🥪

🥪 The Wheatmarket

Tucked into 4 Water Street behind the row of downtown shops and restaurants, The Wheatmarket is a beloved local deli with hometown vibes and hearty, homemade fare.

There’s nothing modern or fancy about it but with it’s impeccable reviews on Google and 4.9 star average on TripAdvisor I knew I had to give it a try. And I’m so happy I did! How could a simple turkey sandwich taste so good and so fresh?!

There are daily soup and sandwich specials and lots to choose from so definitely give this spot a try if you’re looking for a simple but delicious lunch in Chester!

I ordered the turkey, cheese, and cranberry mayo on their freshly baked bread and wow! I’m not a big sandwich person but I was impressed. I’ll defintiely be back and think you should give it a try when you’re in Chester, too!

🥪 Simon’s Marketplace

Hit up Simon’s Marketplace for lunch if you’re in the mood for a hot meal or sandwich with a flair. Simon’s is also perfect for a latte or baked treat if you’re here in the morning or just want a snack!

🥪 The Brushmill by the Waterfall:

If you’d like to sit and savor a long lunch in Chester then choose The Brushmill. Set in a historic mill beside a scenic waterfall, The Brushmill offers elevated, seasonal New American fare. Its charming setting, romantic vibe, and locally inspired menu make it a memorable dining experience here.

4th: Shop & Stroll in Chester 🛍️🖼️

After fueling up for lunch, it’s time to walk and shop! Chester’s shopping scene is small-town charm with an artsy heartbeat. Every storefront feels handpicked, lovingly curated, and proudly independent. Below are a few of my favorites:

🌟Lark (on corner of Main and Water St)

A shop not to miss! Located in a historic stone building, this boutique is a treasure trove of women’s apparel, housewares, fine jewelry, and local artisan finds. It’s consistenyl voted ‘best boutique’ on the shoreline!

🌟The Wayfinder Society

Such a great shop for gifts! A curated cabinet of curiosities, full of global finds and refreshingly unexpected homewares and décor. The owner travels all the way to Sedona and other interesting places to hand pick what you see in the store.

🌟Montgomery & Taggert Bookshop

Not to miss! Be sure to turn right onto Water St from Main St and walk about 5 minutes until you arrive at the cutest little bookshop ever. While it sells mainly romance, the decor and atmosphere in here is worth the visit even if romance is not your thing!

🌟Dina Varano Gallery

Find artisan-designed jewelry and tasteful accessories—great for something special!

🌟Lori Warner Studio & Swoon Boutique

“Exhibit beautiful and thought-provoking work by artists and designers who cherish the process of creating.”

🥾Chester Land Trust Trail (easy)

If you’re in the mood to get a few more steps in while walking around downtown I am going to tell you about a little secret trail right in downtown Chester.

From Main Street, turn right onto Water Street and right after the Montgomery & Taggert Bookshop on the right will be a flat and short trail along a stream leading to a little gazebo! It’s the perfect place to bring a sandwich or your ice cream. 🙂

5th: Visit Little House Brewing Co. 🏠🍺

Tucked into a nearly 200-year-old house at 16 Main Street, Little House Brewing is a warm, homey microbrewery and a must-stop if you’re into beer! Brewed with care and creativity, their ever-changing tap list features everything from silky stouts with chocolate and coffee notes to bright IPAs

downtown Chester CT with little blue house brewing storefront and bright red colonial house to the right with two story deck.

What gives this downtown Chester brewery extra character is its sustainability ethos. Since 2021, they’ve been powered by a Tesla Solar Roof and backed up with Powerwalls—so the lights stay on (and the beer keeps flowing), even during a power outage.

6th: Dinner & Ice Cream in Downtown Chester

🍝Grano Arso:

Recognized by Connecticut Magazine as a top Italian restaurant in 2025, Grano Arso is a must if you’re eating dinner in Chester! I haven’t eaten there yet myself but have only heard amazing things from the fresh bread to homemade pasta.

🍽️ The Village Bistro

Nestled on 59 Main Street, The Village Bistro offers a refined yet welcoming dining experience rooted in New American cuisine with a European twist. Housed in a quaint downtown Chester building, the bistro combines culinary creativity with warmth—whether you’re seated in the elegant main dining room, browsing cocktails in the intimate library lounge, or relaxing at the cozy bar.

🍦Honeycone Craft Ice Cream: A beloved local spot to satisfy your sweet tooth.

More things to do in Chester:

Chester–Hadlyme Ferry: One of Connecticut’s oldest operating ferries, crossing to Gillette Castle with scenic river views and historical charm.

Norma Terris Theatre: Chester’s own regional theater (part of Goodspeed Musicals) offering new musical performances in an intimate historic space.

Chester Historical Society, Goodspeed Opera House, and nearby Gillette Castle State Park make for enriching cultural pairings.

Seasonal Activities in Chester:

🛍️ First Friday Stroll

On the first Friday of every month, Chester Village comes alive from 5–8 pm with its family-friendly First Fridays. Visitors can enjoy new art exhibits, special seasonal menus and ice cream flavors, live music, and plenty of unique shopping along Main Street.”

🌟Starry Nights Illumination Celebration

  • Beginning December 1st, Main Street transforms with over 150 glowing Chester Stars illuminating the downtown with twinkling light sculptures—a holiday highlight. A must-see if visiting Chester in the winter!
