Adventurous Day Trip New Paltz; Hikes, Cafes, Shops, More!
Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Shawangunk Mountains, New Paltz blends small-town charm with a creative, outdoorsy spirit. If your dream day involves spending the morning hiking and the afternoon wandering through funky boutiques and an array of cafรฉs – then New Paltz is the perfect trip for you!
This post covers the best things to do in this lively Hudson Valley town and hiking hub. Every cobblestone, trail, and preserved farmhouse carries layers of history. Your trip here will be as much about time travel as it is about fun!
What I love about New Paltz is first the fun vibe downtown with eclectic shops and cozy coffee shops. You then have the Shawangunk Mountain Ridge (AKA The Gunks) serving as the backdrop of this super cute town.

You could easily spend multiple nights here and feel like you have so much still to explore. The Shawangunk Mountains encompasses Mohonk Preserve and Minnewaska State Park. They are each incredibly vast parks packed with trails of all levels from paved paths to rocky cliffs.
If you like biking or walking you’ve got the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail right running right through the downtown.
Living a state over in Connecticut, I explore New Paltz multiple times a year! I’ve brought my mom for a laid back day of walking around the charming town with an amazing lunch. And then multi-day trips with my husband and our dogs and we feel like we’ve just scratched the surface here..
So let’s get to it and plan the perfect trip to New Paltz!
Adventurous Day Trip Itinerary for New Paltz, NY
1st Stop: Coffee & Cafes in New Paltz โ๏ธ๐ฅ๐ฅ
Before lacing up your boots to hit the trails, youโll want to find a breakfast spot thatโs both cozy and energizing. My top criteria for falling in love with a cafe are atmosphere and menu quality.
These three cafรฉs in New Paltz serve up some fantastic treats, all with a great vibe!
Karma Road Organic Cafรฉ โ๏ธ๐ฅ
I LOVE Karma Road. Even if I don’t get anything here I still must pop in when visiting New Paltz! Though 99% of the time I get something and I always enjoy it.
Nestled mid-Main Street near the river, Karma Road leans heavily into organic, plant-based fare, in the best ways โ from hearty breakfast burritos and sandwiches to vibrant smoothies, juices, and tasty soups made daily.
Their baked goods, sweet treats, and fantastic specialty coffee drinks round out the menu, making it a cozy spot where health conscious meets happy indulgence! Youโll leave feeling nourished in body and spirit, and ready to have some adventures.
Main Street Bistro โ๏ธ๐ฅ
Strategically placed in the heart of Main Street in downtown New Paltz, the Bistro blends casual comfort with some funky touches and exposed art so you feel welcomed and at ease.
The Bistro is great for a traditional breakfast with pancakes or egg sandwich and a cup of coffee – nothing fancy here! I have gotten egg sandwiches to go from here but it’s a sit and eat kind of place. Expect a line later in the morning on weekends!
Village Grind Cafe โ๏ธ๐ฅ
Open everyday 7am-2pm, the Village Grind is a place you can easily stop and get something to go to fuel you up before a hike or exploring the town. I love that it’s located just on the outskirts downtown. This makes it super convenient for us to go to (easy to park!) first thing in the morning when we arrive in town.
They’re got excellent lattes and tons of baked goods to try and egg sandwiches to choose from.
2nd Stop: Hike in New Paltz; 3 Hikes for Stunning Views!๐ฅพ
Once your caffeine fix is secured, it’s time to head into the hills. New Paltz has tremendous hiking options thanks to its immediate proximity to the Shawangunk Ridge, Mohonk Preserve, and Minnewaska State Park Preserve.
Iโve been traveling and exploring here for years and if youโre looking for dramatic views in dramatic landscapes, here are three hikes well worth your time.
๐ฅพLabyrinth & Lemon Squeeze (Mohonk Preserve) – 6.9 Miles – 1,390 feet of elevation
This is one of the most iconic and adventurous hikes near New Paltz! If youโre after a hike that feels more like a rugged adventure and less like a leisurely stroll, the LemonโฏSqueezeโฏ&โฏEagleโฏCliffโฏLoop delivers.
Set deep within the dramatic terrain of the MohonkโฏPreserve, this roughly 7-mile loop takes you through the forest on forgotten carriage roads, up and through narrow crevices, and onto wide ledges with sweeping panoramic views of the dramatic river valley below.
The signature moment is the โLemon Squeezeโ โ a super tight rock corridor you actually squeeze through (yes, you 100% need to literally โsqueezeโ). Don’t do this one if you’re claustrophobic.
Once through youโre greeted immediately by breathtaking soaring views from clifftops of the vast valley below. From there you continue to the โEagle Cliffโ overlook, where the vista opens up even wider: nothing but ridge lines, cliffs, forests, and sky.
Expect worn wooden ladders, boulders, and some steep, unstable terrain โ this is not a beginnerโs walk or for the faint of heart. The only downside with this one is dogs are not allowed! ๐
๐ฅพGertrudeโs Nose & Millbrook Mountain (Minnewaska Preserve) – 6.9 miles – 1,160 feet of elevation
Set atop the rugged ridgeline of the ShawangunkโฏRidge, Gertrudeโs Nose Trail rewards a fearless venturer with some of the most expansive views in the Hudson Valley.
This roughly 7-mile loop weaves from the shores of picturesque LakeโฏMinnewaska, along winding trails through deep forest, across old carriage roads and trails, and finally atop whiteโconglomerate rock cliffs that drop very unforgivingly into the valley below.

The namesake viewpointโโthe Noseโโis a huge plateau of stone that juts outward like a natural balcony, offering incredible panoramic vistas of the surrounding farmland, forests, and distant peaks.
While the terrain is generally pretty moderate to strenuous (expect some steep ups, rocky footing, and drop-offs), the sweeping scenery, the experience itself makes it worth every step.
๐ฅพRiver to Ridge Trail – 1 mile to 6 miles, you choose! Mainly flat

I absolutely LOVED the River to Ridge Trail. The hikes mentioned above might offer more challenging climbs and dramatic views, but this one is memorable for its own unique charm and views!
Right from the start you’ll have views of the Shawangunk Ridge. The path is wide and smooth and winds its way through a meadow and by a farm. We stopped at the farm with the cows and then turned around but the trail continues up and into Mohonk Preserve (Foothills) and I’d love to do the whole thing one day.

But if you’re looking for a family friendly walk in New Paltz, or just something short and relaxing with beautiful views – the River to Ridge Trail is the hike for you!
3rd Stop: Lunch (or Dinner) in New Paltz: 3 Scenic & Fabulous Picks
After youโve crunched through crevasses, dangled from cliffs, scaled wooden ladders, and gawked at a bonafide Mountain castle, you have likely worked up a solid appetite.
Here are three tried and true lunch stops that pair fantastic grub with great ambiance, and as an extra added secret bonus, sometimes wonderful views:
Garvanโs Gastropub

After a long, rewarding hike, in my experience, thereโs no better place to unwind than Garvanโs Gastropub. On a warm day you can sit on the patio under twinkle lights or cozy up inside by the bar, Garvanโs perfectly blends comfort, flavor, and a sense of small-town magic.
Set inside a charming 18th-century stone farmhouse surrounded by lush trees and gardens, Garvanโs ties it all together. Thereโs a rustic elegance coupled with genuine hospitality that has made this spot one of my absolute favorites.
The cozy interiorโcomplete with fireplaces and low wooden beamsโfeels like you’ve stepped back in time.
If some post hike suds are your thing, the craft beer selection here is unmatched. Along with incredibly tender shepherdโs pie or a hearty dish of short ribs, youโve struck gold by simply walking through the front door.
Maggie Maeโs
Perched overlooking the New Paltz Golf Course with a backdrop of the glorious Shawangunk Ridge, Maggie Maeโs is known for its scenic and familial setting (indoor and patio dining) and killer menu.
Inside, youโll find rustic wood accents, friendly staff, and a menu packed with comfort favoritesโfrom burgers and sandwiches to creative and tasty brunch options.
The outdoor patio offers fresh air and mountain views, making it ideal for post-hike celebrations
4th Stop: Shopping & Exploring Downtown New Paltz ๐๏ธ

One of my favorite parts about visiting New Paltz is wandering around downtown after a hike.
It has such a fun, artsy, laid-back vibe that feels different from a lot of other Hudson Valley towns. Main Street is lined with colorful storefronts, independent bookstores, outdoor outfitters, boutiques, gift shops, antique stores, and plenty of places to grab an ice cream or sweet treat while you explore.
In addition to Main Street, be sure to leave some time walking up and down Water Street Market. It’s a charming little collection of locally owned shops tucked just off Main Street and you’ll see the Shawangunk Mountains in the distance.
Between all the shops you’ll find unique boutiques, artisan goods, home dรฉcor, handmade jewelry, specialty foods, and cozy cafรฉs along the way. Even if you’re not planning to buy anything, it’s the kind of place that’s fun to wander through.
Other Activities in New Paltz
๐ด๐ฝโโ๏ธBike or Walk the Rail Trail
The Wallkill Valley Rail Trail is easier terrain and a great post-hike unwind. But some sections cross roads, bridges, or gravel paths; proceed with care.
๐ฅพOne more hike suggestion โก๏ธ Bonticou Crag
I didn’t want the hikes to take over this guide to New Paltz so I saved this other special hike for the end in case you want even more to choose from. There are just so many good ones and I couldn’t leave this one out either!
For an exhilarating half-day escape, with a little less mileage, the Bonticou Crag & Table Rocks Loop in the MohonkโฏPreserve delivers a memorable mix of meandering forests, rock-scrambling and wide open cliff-top panoramas.
The 5.5 mile loop starts off by winding through quiet forest and over old logging roads before quickly transforming into a steep scramble up the all too familiar white-conglomerate boulders of Bonticou Crag.
At the summit youโre rewarded with spectacular views of the Hudson Valley and distant Catskill peaksโthereโs something about this cliffside perch that is truly special. Whether itโs the precipitous cliffs or wide open vistas that seem to have their own gravitational force, this spot boasts some of the greatest views in the Hudson Valley.
From there the trail rolls back into the shaded woodland and toward Table Rocksโa series of flat, expansive ledges that are perfect for a little snack and water break. Be careful, though! Like many other trails in this area, there are many fissures separating large plates of stone, some very deep and narrow. You do NOT want to fall into one.
The terrain here, as well as most notable hikes in the area, demands good footwear, confident navigation, and comfortable use of hands and feet on the scrambles; itโs not ideal for small children or dogs.
For the effort youโll get a unique adventure thatโs both physically engaging and richly scenicโone that will stay nicely in your memory long after the descent.
A Little New Paltz History
When you arrive and step into New Paltz youโre not just arriving in a lively Hudson Valley town and hiking hub โ youโre stepping onto ground with centuries of history woven into its bedrock.
The town, once purchased by French pilgrims from the Esopus Munsee Native Americans for blankets and gunpowder, now boasts fabulous eating and incredible hiking.
This small but bustling town once brought big city Prohibition era scandal to the grand Victorian Mohonk Mountain House, where libations were dished out to wealthy patrons, unbeknownst to Johnny Law.
Donโt worry though, today there are plenty of fantastic dram shops where you can sample spirits legally ๐
Final Thoughts
New Paltz is a gem of the Hudson Valley: small but packed with natural drama, historical depth, and a spirited local culture.
A single day can take you from colonial stone houses to cliff edges on the Shawangunk Ridge, and back to a warm cafรฉ or scenic lunch stop.
With an early start, smart choices, and respect for the land, youโll leave with your lungs full of mountain air โ your belly full of yummy eats, and your camera full of memories ๐
