7 Hudson Valley Day Trips: Charming Towns, Trails, and Views!
The Hudson Valley stretches from Westchester County (just north of NYC) through the Catskills and all the way up to Albanyโabout 150 miles of charming towns, scenic landscapes, and endless places to explore. With the Hudson River running right through the center, itโs no surprise this region is known for some of the most beautiful views in New York.
What makes the Hudson Valley feel so special is that perfect mix of mountains, nature and charming walkable downtowns. Incredible hikes, cozy farm-to-table restaurants and cafรฉs, outdoor art spaces, and historic sites are what each of these Hudson Valley towns so special and worth the visit.

Living next door in Connecticut means I can easily get here for a quick day trip, and itโs become one of my favorite places to explore.
If your ideal day includes a hike or scenic walk, wandering through downtown, stopping into cozy cafรฉs with locally made food, and browsing unique shopsโthis guide is for you!
In this post, I share 7 Hudson Valley towns to visit. So let’s get to exploring all the Hudson Valley has to offer! โฌ๏ธโฌ๏ธ

7 Must-Visit Hudson Valley Towns!
1. Woodstock, NY (Ulster County)
Woodstock is a gem and has the best of the Hudson Valley all wrapped up in one town. Find a laid-back, artsy vibe combined with being surrounded by the Catskill Mountains. Colorful Tinker Street is filled with local shops, galleries, and cozy spots to grab coffee.

How to spend the perfect day in Woodstock: Start with coffee and breakfast at Bread Alone, followed by a hike in Woodstock (Overlook Mountain is a moderate hike with big views right in town!), then back to the town to stroll the shops on Main Street, wander Mower’s Flea Market on Saturdays and Sundays with an iced tea from Gemela Market! ๐

2. New Paltz, NY (Ulster County)
Like Woodstock, New Paltz also has a super fun energy. It’s another Hudson Valley town that perfectly combines an artsy scene with the Shawangunk Mountains as the backdrop (you can see the ridge right from town!). โฐ๏ธ It’s incredibly scenic!
There are tons of amazing hikes in Minnewaska State Park or its neighbor Mohawk Preserve and you’ll find miles of trails, carriage roads, views, and several waterfalls.

The perfect day in New Paltz: Grab breakfast to go at Village Grind (we like that it’s outside of Main Downtown hub and we can easily park and go) or a vegan burrito at Karma Road, hike in Minnewaska State Park, then stroll the downtown local shops popping in and out, and end with a classic pot roast on the twinkle lit patio for dinner at Garvan’s Gastropub! Our favorite.
I’m not into being out after dinner given how I like to pack my days, but if you’re looking for more nightlife you’ll find that in New Paltz!
3. Cold Spring, NY (Dutchess County)
Cold Spring is a unique and scenic town that sits right along the Hudson River! I love how can see the river from a cafe on Main Street. All of the towns are walkable but Cold Spring has a more charming almost New England vibe compared to Woodstock and New Paltz above.

My favorite day in Cold Spring involves a hike at Breakneck Ridgeโitโs a challenge, but the views over the river are worth it. Afterward, Main Street is lined with small shops, cafรฉs, and places to grab something to eat, all just steps from the water.
4. Tannersville, NY (Greene County)
Tannersville, known as the “painted village in the sky”, is the gateway to big mountain hikes in the Catskills.
It has a smaller downtown area compared to the other towns above. It doesn’t take long to walk and see everything…

But what it is amazing for is it’s proximity to tons of big hikes in the Catskills. If you’re more into tackling a mountain, perhaps one of the the Catskill’s 35 mountains above 3500 feet, then the town of Tannersville is for you.
My favorite day in Tannersville involves a hike at North South Lake, Fred’s Donuts, lunch at The Pantry on Main, and browsing Tannersville Antique & Artisan Center!
And if you’d like to see NY’s tallest waterfall take a short drive to Kaaterskill Falls!
5. Beacon, NY (Dutchess County)
Beacon is just 12 minutes north of Cold Spring and these Hudson Valley towns are very similar. Beacon’s downtown area is a bit bigger than Cold Spring’s so there is a lot to explore here.
Main Street is full of great spots to eat, browse, and explore, and itโs easy to spend a few hours just taking it all in.
If youโre looking to get outside, hiking up Mount Beacon gives you sweeping views of the Hudson Valley, while spots like Dia Beacon offer a completely different kind of experience with large-scale contemporary art.
6. Rhinebeck, NY (Dutchess County)
Rhinebeck is a town in the Hudson Valley that has a super cool feel with so much history woven in. Itโs home to the Beekman Armsโthe oldest continuously operating inn in the country and the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome, where you can catch vintage airshows that feel like stepping back in time.
The downtown is just as goodโsuper walkable, with a mix of cozy spots and a little bit of that upscale feel, plus boutique shops and fun stops like Samuel’s Sweet Shop.
7. Hudson, NY (Columbia County)
Hudson has a unique energy compared to some of the smaller townsโitโs a little trendier, a little more design-focused, and full of interesting shops and restaurants.
Walking along Warren Street is the highlight here, with plenty of places to stop along the way. For a bit of fresh air, head out to Olana State Historic Site, where youโll get incredible views over the Hudson River and a peaceful place to walk it all off.
Tips for Planning the Perfect Hudson Valley Day Trip!
- Start early -popular trails and parking fill up quickly, especially on weekends
- Fall is the busiest (and most beautiful) time to visit, but spring and summer are just as worth it with fewer crowds
- Mix one activity with time in townโa hike + lunch + wandering is the perfect balance
- Donโt overpack your dayโthese towns are best enjoyed at a slower pace! ๐ง๐ปโโ๏ธ
