A Weekend in Woodstock, NY; Hikes, Cafes, Shops & More!

Woodstock, New York, may just be one of the most mythologized little towns in America.

Visitors often arrive expecting a sort of living museum to the infamous 1969 Woodstock Festival. And while the town was the first choice by the festival’s production team, and did inspire the concert’s name, it famously didn’t host it.

That honor went to Bethel, about 60 miles away. But despite its physical location, “Woodstock”, with its earthy, defiant ring, remained the namesake of the gathering.

This little Catskill town has long been cultivating its own creative, countercultural identity for the better part a century.

Bob Dylan famously wrote much of “Bringing It All Back Home” here. The Band recorded “Music From Big Pink” just outside town.

And walking the streets on any given Saturday, you can still feel that energy—buzzing in the shop windows, the cafes and bookshops, and in the surrounding hillside.

Today, Woodstock is an irresistible blend of old-school hippie charm, modern creative culture, timeless scenic beauty, and seriously fantastic food.

It’s a place where you can sip a perfect latte, climb to sweeping mountain vistas, shop for quirky crafts, and finish the day with a world-class meal—all in one walkable, enchantingly nostalgic village.

So if you’re heading to Woodstock area for a day trip or a weekend getaway this straightforward and easy guide has you covered!

Let's dive into where to fuel up, the best trails around, superbly funky shopping, and unforgettable places to eat in one of the Hudson Valley’s most iconic towns.

Things to Do For a Fun & Adventurous Weekend in Woodstock, NY

➡️ 1st: Fuel Up: Cafés in Woodstock

Whether you’re heading to the looming Overlook Mountain, exploring a mellow preserve trail, or simply exploring the hidden alleys and side paths off Tinker Street, Woodstock offers an absolutely stellar lineup of morning stops.

☕️ Moonrise Bagels 🥯

Visit Moonrise Bagels for a twist on a classic breakfast. Stuffed bagels—yes, bagels with the filling baked right inside!

Everything-bagels stuffed with scallion cream cheese, cinnamon raisin bagels filled with maple-walnut spread, or savory bagels enveloping scrambled eggs.

They’re portable, filling, and honestly perfect for grabbing & going before you explore Woodstock! No fancy lattes here though, but regular or iced coffee - yes!

🍳☕️ Bread Alone 🥖🥐

Bread Alone is a Hudson Valley institution—and Woodstock’s location is one of its most beloved.

They've got tons of freshly baked breads, pastries, and fresh egg sandwiches - plus a full coffee bar too!

The only reason we didn't go here every morning was the long line on weekends.

If you can't make it here for breakfast be sure to visit later in the day for lunch! 🥪

➡️ 2nd: Take a hike! Trails for Every Explorer...

Woodstock sits in an ideal spot for Catskill hiking—offering everything from classic, easy meadow loops to the dramatic, rugged mountain climbs.

Here are a few favorites that you won't regret plugging into your weekend in Woodstock, NY. Regardless of your choice, a perfect adventure awaits!

🥾 Overlook Mountain ⛰️

Overlook Mountain is Woodstock’s signature hike: a steep but straightforward climb on a wide gravel (or iced over) access road that creeps steadily towards a summit experience like no other.

The trail has you gaining elevation quickly, with extended switchbacks zig zagging through the forest until all of a sudden a shadow blocks the sun…

Here you’ve reached the super eerie yet superbly photogenic Overlook Mountain House ruins looming like a silent giant sentry. Explore carefully!

Following the beautifully burned out concrete ruins of a bygone era, a fire tower with sweeping 360° views over a monstrous swathe of the Hudson Valley is your next stop.

🥾 Thorne Preserve Loop 🌲

Managed by the Woodstock Land Conservancy, the Thorne Preserve offers an exceptional low-effort, high-reward stroll through the surrounding Woodstock hills.

There are several gentle, easy walking paths through serene meadows, dewy majestic grasslands, and lightly wooded thickets. We visited just before sunset and so no one else there and got to see the sky light up soft pink behind the mountains.

🥾 Snake Rocks Preserve Loop

Snake Rocks Preserve is a touch lesser-known Woodstock gem: a forested loop with very funky rock formations, cinematic moss-covered boulders, and quiet, lightly trafficked trails.

The quarry and fields of stone have always felt a little eerie to me, but very interesting and well worth the trek.

🥾 Kaaterskill Falls 💦

Though a 38 minute drive from Woodstock, Kaaterskill Falls is one of the region’s most iconic natural thundering landmarks—and absolutely well worth the detour.

This MONSTER, two-tiered waterfall plunges nearly 260 feet in total, making it one of the tallest falls in New York State.

Trails around the falls range from easy viewing paths to rugged climbs, but all angles deliver that powerful Catskill aesthetic magic.

3rd: Lunch in Woodstock, NY

🥪Woodstock Meats — Old-School Butcher + Prepared Foods

More than just a butcher, Woodstock Meats is a staple and a must-visit for locals and tourists.

Stop in for high-quality meats, homemade sausages, excellent sandwiches, and grab-and-go meals perfect for picnics or that first night stumbling into your hotel or Airbnb.

It’s also a great place to stock up for grilling weekends, cabin getaways, or even some rugged camping.

Authentic, unfussy, and delicious.

Gemela Market Café: For Best Iced Tea, Great Sandwiches

Gemela Market Café is a standout star in Woodstock—equal parts market, chill hangout, and cozy café.

Their iced tea is arguably the best in town, if not possibly, on Earth. Lightly sweet, crisp, and refreshing (a total life-preserver after a hot summer hike!).

Their pastries are excellent, their prepared foods are elevated but not in the least bit snobby or intimidating, and everything has that market-fresh, thoughtfully curated feel.

This is the place to stock up on snacks, sandwiches, and trail-friendly eats you’ll actually look forward to eating.

☮️ Peace, Love, Cupcakes 🧁

Bright, colorful, and delightfully nostalgic, Peace, Love, Cupcakes is a little Woodstock treat shop that leans fully into the frosting and sprinkles side of life.

They offer creative cupcake flavors, sweet treats, and a bubbly atmosphere that’s sure to bring out the inner kid in any lucky visitor.

It’s not your traditional pre-hike stop—but absolutely worth popping into if you like smuggling sugary delights into the wilds of upstate New York.

☕️ Overlook Bakery 🧁

A newer addition to Woodstock’s culinary scene, Overlook Bakery feels like stepping into a warm, colorful kitchen filled with the aroma of fresh pastries.

Their baked goods are flaky, rich, and clearly created with love—perfect for a pre-hike indulgence or a sweet reward after coming out of the wilderness.

4th: Shops, Strolls & Sightseeing in Woodstock

After a perfectly spent morning getting nicely caffeinated and getting your steps in, it’s time to spend some time exploring the ins and outs of Woodstock’s charming downtown.

It’s an adventure all its own to meander around this village filled with quirky shops, artist collectives, nostalgic stores, and peaceful corners.

Stroll Along Tinker Street

Tinker Street is Woodstock’s beating heart—lined with boutiques, cafés, galleries, gift shops, bookstores, restaurants, and colorful storefronts that feel straight out of a movie set.

IF you’re here, you have to creep around, it’s an essential Woodstock experience.

Don’t rush—part of the magic is wandering slowly. There are tons of hidden alleyways and side streets to explore.

Woodstock Emporium Holiday Haus

This place brings out the little lad or las in all who step through its front door.

The Holiday Haus is a local treasure trove of fun finds: quirky gifts, Catskill-themed T-shirts, handmade ornaments, souvenirs, locally inspired décor, and—best of all—ridiculously excellent fudge and chocolates.

I can’t not visit here when lucky enough to be in Woodstock. It’s colorful, festive, and draws all like a moth to a flame.

Candlestock: Famous Candle “Tree” + Handmade Goods

So, you have to understand, Woodstock has an uncanny amount of “iconic” elements,  but Candlestock is one of Woodstock’s most iconic shops.

To implore a visit, one need only mention the towering wax “candle tree”—an installation formed from decades of melted wax, that greets visitors.

Beyond the spectacle, the shop offers an incredible variety of candles, incense, and handmade goods, as well as classes in candle craft!

Whether you’re after whimsical, seasonal, or artsy-crafted, this place is pure sensory overload, but in the best ways.

Local Weekend Flea Market

Woodstock’s weekend flea market is a rotating marketplace of local creativity and collectable prowess—offering killer vintage clothing, handmade crafts, rare antiques, vinyl records, jewelry, art, and tons of other one-of-a-kind finds.

To me, this local market has always captured the town’s free-spirited essence in its purest form.

You never know what you’ll discover, which is of course half the fun.

Woodstock Pet Supply

Now remember, this trip isn’t all about you!

If you’re visiting with pets—or simply love spoiling your animals—Woodstock Pet Supply can be a savior.

The super friendly staff can offer thoughts on tastiest treats, hiking essentials, accessories, and a great selection of natural pet products.

It’s especially handy if you forgot a leash (often), need water bowls for the trail (always), or want to grab a special snack for your four-legged hiking buddy (Eternally).

4th: Dinner in Woodstock

After a full day of hiking, shopping, and bumbling through Woodstock, you’ll be more than ready for a great meal.

Fortunately, the town—and nearby (less crowded) Bearsville—deliver some excellent options.

The Bear Cantina (Bearsville) — Casual Mexican, Great When Others Are Booked

white bowls filled with refried beans and mexican rice and basket of tortilla chips on table.

Directly outside of Woodstock proper, The Bear Cantina is a laid-back Mexican restaurant that hits the spot when you want something flavorful, comforting, and good!

It’s especially helpful if you don’t have reservations at Woodstock’s more in-demand dinner spots.

Expect tacos, enchiladas, rice bowls, margaritas, and a relaxed vibe that welcomes reasonably muddy hikers, families, and all walks of walk-ins.

Silvia — Wood-Fired, Stylish, and Farm-Forward

Silvia is one of Woodstock’s standout dining experiences: creative, beautifully prepared dishes made with seasonal ingredients, cooked with a wood-fired flair in and amongst some wonderful ambiance.

I’d say the atmosphere is chic yet warm and inviting, blending Catskill charm with a modern metro dining experience.

Whether you’re craving veggies, deliciously charred meats, or imaginative cocktails, Silvia will always deliver a memorable meal.

Pearl Moon Woodstock — Comfort Food + Live Music Energy

Pearl Moon blends that Woodstock charming character with classic farm-to-table comfort food.

Their menu includes hearty breakfast plates, perfect lunch dishes, and creative dinner options—all served in a space decorated with a funky, eclectic flair.

There’s live music here regularly, making it a lively and vibrant spot for locals and visitors alike.

It’s a down to earth type of place, a place where you’ll feel right at home.

Conclusion 🙂

It's time for bed - you've had a jam packed day of fun walks, shops, and exploring in the town of Woodstock, NY.

If you're here for the weekend you can start this list over choosing a different bakery for breakfast, a new hike from the list, and try a different spot for lunch before you head home.

I love it here.

🗞️Extra: Fun Woodstock History

Woodstock’s magnetic pull can be traced back to the early twentieth century, when for one reason or another, it became a gathering place for artists seeking community in nature, and kindled what would become a haven of creative freedom.

The Byrdcliffe Colony, decades ahead of their future hippie peers, established the town in 1902 as one of America’s earliest arts-and-crafts utopian experiments. Painters, furniture makers, writers, musicians and crafty folk from all walks of life flocked to these hills, living simply and creating collaboratively.

Soon after, another colony, this one named Maverick, added to the town’s artistic fire—hosting wild, theatrical outdoor festivals that were equal parts avant-garde, community celebration, and semi-organized madness in the sticks.

Local lore says the Maverick Festivals got so raucous that they were eventually shut down, but not before leaving behind a legacy of celebrating radical creativity, throwing radical parties, and being radical.

By the 1900s, Woodstock had become a near-mythic creative enclave—a rural refuge for musicians like Bob Dylan, The Band, Richie Havens, and countless other legendary troubadours who found inspiration in New York’s quiet forests and winding backroads.
