It’s a 4 and a half hour drive here to Lake Placid for me but I continue to come back multiple times each year. The memories stay with me long after the annoying drive 😉 and anytime I’m here it truly feels like a little escape!

1. Explore Olympic History at the Olympic Center

The Olympic Center in Lake Placid is a treasure trove of history and fun! Home to the Olympic Museum and multiple ice rinks, this center celebrates the spirit of the Olympic Games and the athletes who made history here. Walking through the halls, you can’t help but feel the echoes of past competitions, especially in the iconic 1932 Jack Shea Arena and the 1980 Herb Brooks Arena, where the Miracle on Ice game took place.
The Olympic Museum houses North America’s second-largest collection of Winter Olympic artifacts, making it a must-visit for sports enthusiasts. Walk through the museum, try the interactive exhibits, hands-on experience of sitting in a bobsled (kid friendly!), or l enjoy the documentary highlighting the Miracle on Ice game.
2. Take a Hike!

With Lake Placid being in the heart of New York’s Adirondack Park – taking a hike in or around Lake Placid should be at the top of your list!
Adirondack Park is covers over six million acres and is the largest publicly protected area in the contiguous United States, even bigger than Yellowstone, Everglades, and Glacier National Parks combined! 3. Check Out a Brewery

My favorite casual Lake Placid spot to eat and hang out! You may not think of a brewery as a go-to place for food but since I’m not a big beer drinker, the food is the most important part for me and Big Slide Brewery does not disappoint!
I LOVED their homemade pizzas and it was so relaxing to sit outside with the laid back dog & kid-friendly atmosphere!
In addition to Big Slide, there’s also Lake Placid Pub & Brewery which I haven’t been to yet but offers but has award-winning beer – microbrewed ales and lagers, including the famous Ubu Ale. For food they’ve got burgers & traditional pub food that looks amazing in the pics online!
4. Walk & Shop Around Downtown Lake Placid



Downtown Lake Placid is a super charming area and you’ll find so many shops that make you say – “I’m just going to pop in real quick!” to whoever you’re with.:)
Strolling along Main Street and you’ll find boutique shops, unique gifts and local crafts, a bookstore, multiple ice cream places, candy store, even an arcade!
There are numerous clothing stores too so whether you forgot your hiking boots or need a sweater to wear to dinner you’ll find a store for that here!
5. John Brown Farm State Historic Site
Located just 3 miles southeast of Lake Placid, the John Brown Farm State Historic Site is steeped in history! This site honors the memory of abolitionist John Brown, who played a pivotal role in the fight against slavery. After his execution for the Harpers Ferry raid, Brown’s body was returned to his farm, where he is now buried in front of his home.
The historic site is open year-round, with specific visiting hours from Wednesday to Sunday. From May to October, the house is accessible to visitors, offering a deep dive into the life and legacy of John Brown.

High Falls Gorge is an excellent choice for a scenic and accessible hike. The loop trail is just 1 mile long, making it an easy and enjoyable walk for all ages. You’ll encounter four stunning waterfalls along the way, each offering beautiful views and photo opportunities.
High Falls Gorge is open from December to March, providing a winter wonderland experience. Seasoned hikers and leisurely strollers alike will be impressed by the beauty of High Falls Gorge.

An hour outside of Lake Placid but worth checking out if you live far and traveled far to be here. The massive stone bridge arch is the largest marble cave entrance in the east!
Put on your boots, grab a map and camera, and set out on a self-guided, above ground, natural stone step nature trail in this marble gorge and cave. You’ll descend into lighted surface caves with waterfalls or tranquil dark pools. There are also Adventure Tours you can sign up for, too, if you want to head even deeper into the cave!

The Olympic Jumping Complex is where the excitement truly takes flight. Start your adventure with the Skyride, an eight-passenger gondola that takes you to the base of the ski jumping towers. Ok, if you aren’t a hiker and don’t plan on walking to mountain or hilltops for views (or even if you do!) you must drive down Loj Road when yoou visit Lake Placid.
You will get incredible views of the Adirondack High Peaks all along this scenic road. Don’t be surprised if you see a couple other people pulled over for photos and you should do the same!
I’m in awe every time I drive past or down this road. The view of the mountains in all the different seasons never gets old!
