Living in New England all my life, I am situated in the best destination for fall. But that doesn't stop me from venturing across state lines into one of the most beautiful places in any season - Lake Placid, New York, in the heart of the Adirondacks. 🌲🌲

There's so much to do in Lake Placid and so many amazing hikes near Lake Placid; it keeps us coming back several times a year. But of course, fall is a very special and fleeting time. So I'm excited to help you plan your fall trip and share everything we learned on ours!

We visited October 12-14th, and it appeared to be peak foliage. Peak hits at different times each year, but check this handy foliage report to get a gauge on how far along the leaves are! 🍁

Whether you're coming for the hiking, the easy views all around town, or a relaxing autumn escape with books and Lake Placid coffee shops, this town makes for an unforgettable fall getaway.

I provide several ways to admire the fall scenery and take amazing photos 📸, from scenic Lake Placid hikes to taking in the views on a gondola to easy strolls the whole family can do.

So let's get to it ➡️ Here's your full weekend itinerary, packed with the best things to do, see, and eat this fall in Lake Placid!

🍁 Day 1: Arrival: Scenic Strolls + Cozy Eats

➤ Check-In & Explore Downtown

Arrive in Lake Placid and get settled in. There are plenty of cozy inns and lodges in the area, but Mirror Lake Inn is a favorite for its lakeside views and quintessential Adirondack feel.

Once you're settled, take a leisurely walk around Main Street. The downtown area is full of cute shops, outdoor gear stores, and local boutiques. Grab a comfy sweatshirt, a fall-scented candle, or some locally made maple syrup!

☕️ Coffee Stop: Origin Coffee Co.

If you can make it (closes at 2:00), Origin Coffee Co. is a great spot to fuel up with a warm tea, matcha, or fall latte. The one I got had cinnamon and local maple syrup and was perfect! They have pastries, cookies, and near-perfect reviews on Google, so make it a point to get here at some point during your stay!

🥾 Easy Walk at Heaven Hills Trail

This place is aptly named. Walking the flat trails here is an Adirondack dream! You are surrounded by views of mountains in the distance almost the whole time. From the parking lot follow signs for Big Field Loop, you can start this 1.5-mile loop clockwise or counterclockwise.

(There is another loop that stems off this trail called Big Cub Loop; we did not take that one, but you could if you'd like to walk longer!)

🍽️ Dinner at The Interlaken Inn

Nothing says cozy fall weekend than this dinner at The Interlaken Inn—a hidden gem nestled in a historic home. We ate here for my birthday dinner and it felt so special! We sat in the fireplace room 🔥 and were the only ones in there for a bit since we went early. They brought out popcorn, and with the fire going in the background, it was the perfect place to eat for a fall weekend.

Their seasonal menu features locally sourced ingredients, and in the fall, you can expect rich flavors and classic comfort dishes, such as the braised short ribs, which we had and loved!

Time to settle in for the night and look forward to day two in Lake Placid!🍁

🍂 Day 2: Hiking, Views, and Fireside Treats

☕️ Fuel up at Capisce Coffee & Espresso Bar

Capisce, which claims to serve 'meticulously brewed Italian coffee', is another special coffee shop in Lake Placid. They've got egg sandwiches and lots of freshly baked goods to choose from.

With all the plants and natural wood in and outside, it feels like you're in a little greenhouse here! There are tables in and outside if you'd like to sit.

🍁Ways to Catch Fall Foliage View in Lake Placid:

1. Ride the Cloudsplitter Gondola Ride at Whiteface Mountain 🚡

This is a great way to see the fall foliage in Lake Placid with little effort! The Cloudsplitter Gondola at Whiteface Mountain takes you (8 people total) on a smooth ride to the top of Little Whiteface in about 15 minutes!

A popular activity for fall in Lake Placid, it's important that you check the calendar and buy tickets ahead of time. As I look at the calendar here in August, there are already weekend days in September and October that are sold out! 🗓️ Click here to view availability and get tickets for the ride! 🚠

On the ride, you'll see amazing views of the Adirondack Mountains, Lake Placid, and even Lake Champlain on a clear day. At the top, there’s an observation deck, picnic area, and short trail where you can enjoy the fresh mountain air and beautiful fall scenery.

2. 🥾Choose a Hike:

Shortest: Baker Mountain, 1.6 miles, 882 feet elevation, moderate

Just a short 10-15 minute drive outside of Lake Placid in Saranac Lake lies the short but very scenic (and steep!) Baker Mountain. We hiked here just before sunset so we could get that golden glow illuminating the fall leaves, and it was such a good choice!

While it is a little steep, it's not technical. Our dogs did just fine, and we saw kids of all ages on the hike. Since it has great views for short mileage, I'd suggest getting here early on a weekend or later in the day for sunset, like we did!

Short: Baxter Mountain, 2.7 miles, 774 ft elevation, moderate

We did this hike for sunrise, and wow, it was magical! Similar to Baker Mountain, it's a big payoff for a shorter hike. The hike up is not as steep but at the very top there is a small scramble section where you will want to use your hands to help you up. It's not dangerous or on the cliff edge but just something to be aware of.

Longer: Mount Van Hoevenberg, 4.2 miles, 885 ft elevation, Moderate

Just 5 miles outside Lake Placid, Mount Van Hoevenberg is probably the perfect fall hike. You'll hike through shaded pines by a pond and up a gradual elevation (nothing technical) to the top, where you have wide open views.

We did this hike for sunset in late summer and I'd love to see it again in prime fall time!

3. 🍁Visit the Adirondack Loj & Heart Lake

After your hike (or even in place of a hike if you want fall views without the hard work!), swing by the Adirondack Loj, located at the trailhead to Mount Jo. Built in 1927, the Loj is a huge cabin that houses hikers and serves meals, but you can wander around and check out the history here and a large, comfy fireplace room!

After checking out the cozy Loj cabin, you can take an easy stroll around Heart Lake, where plenty of fall photo opportunities await.

Take time to stroll around Heart Lake, soak in the mountain views with pops of orange and yellow trees, and snap some fall foliage pictures. It’s peaceful, scenic, and quintessentially Adirondacks!

🍪Afternoon Tea & Cookie at Mirror Lake Inn

After your afternoon activity, treat yourself to a break at the Mirror Lake Inn Resort & Spa for their classic afternoon tea and cookie service! You don't have to be a guest to enjoy this! You can order a drink at the bar or just grab a cookie and a scenic seat!

💦Waterfall Stop: High Falls Gorge or Stag Falls

On your way out for the afternoon, make time to visit a local waterfall. High Falls Gorge is a great and easy place to walk just a short drive from Lake Placid with a well-maintained walkway. But it does not allow dogs!

If you prefer a more low-key stop, check out Stag Falls, pictured below, located at Whiteface Mountain Ski Center. The trail is only 1.3 miles, but there is a bit of elevation (~500 ft). Another option is to walk about 0.2 miles to get to Lower Stag Falls if you don't want to walk to Upper Stag Falls.

🍺🍕Dinner & Drinks: Big Slide Brewery

End your day with dinner at Big Slide Brewery & Public House. Their menu is farm-to-table and absolutely delicious. I still think about the wood-fired pizza! Pair it with a seasonal craft beer, like a maple amber ale or pumpkin porter, and toast to a perfect fall day.

If it's not too chilly, grab a flannel and sit outside! It's even dog-friendly. 🐶

🍂 Day 3: Sunrise + Farewell Adventure

☕️ Breakfast at The Breakfast Club, Etc.

Before heading out, grab brunch at The Breakfast Club, Etc.—a Lake Placid staple. Their maple lattes and hearty breakfasts are just the thing before hitting the road.

🥾Optional Hike

If you're an early bird (hi, us too!), take a peaceful sunrise walk along Mirror Lake, or choose another hike from above, or my top 10 hikes in Lake Placid list! Check out Mount Jo and my advice to the secret lookout!

🍁 Scenic Drive: Route 73 or Route 86

Two must-do drives would be Route 73 south to Keene and Route 86 north to Wilmington. If I could only choose one, I'd drive Route 86 to and a little past Whiteface Mountain. There are lots of places to pull off and explore!

🍂 💡Bonus Ideas for Fall in Lake Placid:

  • Olympic Sites: Tour the Olympic Jumping Complex or ride the gondola at Whiteface Mountain for sweeping views.
  • Lake Placid Center for the Arts: Check the schedule for a local show or exhibit.
  • John Brown Farm: Visit this historic site surrounded by open fields and easy trails. I visited in the summer but would love to walk around here in the fall.
