Mount Sanford Trail Guide; Naugatuck State Forest
Hike past streams, stone walls, and under a canopy of trees, leading to a scenic west-facing overlook atop Mount Sanford along the Quinnipiac Trail in Naugatuck State Forest.
At just 15 miles (or about 25 minutes) from New Haven, the Mount Sanford Loop in the 5,000-acre Naugatuck State Forest is a tranquil forest escape where you and your pup can enjoy some peaceful time on the trails.
Tucked into the Cheshire side of this sprawling CT State Forest, this loop hike offers a mix of wide forest roads and narrower wooded paths that wind through a shaded canopy of oak and maple trees, along gentle streams, and up to a scenic overlook.
Aside from the views, you’ll appreciate the half mile stretch along a wide gravel path where you can see a long way in front of you. This is a great spot to let the dogs have a little room and run a bit.

This 3.49-mile Mount Sanford Loop is part of the 20-mile blue-blazed Quinnipiac Trail. While it is not too challenging, it has a steady uphill section leading to the lookout, which is great for energetic dogs. There is nothing technical about the short incline, as there are rocks that serve as steps as you walk up.
